Spanish authorities have dropped criminal proceedings for tax evasion against Barcelona striker Leo Messi but will instead continue prosecution of his father who was his agent.
Messi's father, Jorge Messi, if found guilty, could face up to 18 months in jail and a fine of £1.6 million.
Messi and his father were accused of evading taxes to the tune of £3.1million.
Prosecutors allege that his father was able to defraud the Spanish authorities by using offshore companies in Belize and Uruguay in 2007 and 2009.
The prosecutor stated that Lionel Messi should not have to face charges since his father was in charge of his finances as documents published reveal.
